How was gunpowder discovered?
In ancient China people believed that it was possible to create a mixture that
would give you everlasting life. So for many years they would try many different
ways hoping to make the discovery they wanted. Salt peter (potassium nitrate) was
commonly used in these kinds of mixtures. When a man in ancient China was trying to create this mixture he mixed fifteen parts of charcoal, ten parts of sulphur and
seventy five parts of salt peter together. When he was testing the mixture, he lit the mixture on fire and it made a large explosion. Although this mixture failed the use he
wanted, he had created the world’s first gunpowder. Once Gunpowder was discovered
they soon found many uses for it.
